Garcia: “Ministry and Police not giving up on nation’s children…”

Education Minister, Anthony Garcia, says the Ministry of Education has not given up the fight to bring back discipline and ensure a peaceful environment in the nation's schools.

Speaking on The Morning Brew show today, the education minister confirmed that the ministry has been working closely with Police Commissioner Gary Griffith and his team, to find solutions to the increasing indiscipline and violence in the nation’s 700-plus schools.

School sanitised after TML students fall ill with suspected stomach bug

Health work­ers sani­tised the Trinidad Mus­lim League (TML) Pri­ma­ry School in San Fer­nan­do yes­ter­day af­ter dozens of chil­dren fell ill with a  stom­ach ail­ment.

Par­ents said that at least 20 pupils in stan­dard four suf­fered from nau­sea and di­ar­rhoea on Tues­day. By yes­ter­day morn­ing, some of the stan­dard 3 pupils be­gan suf­fer­ing from the same symp­toms. This led to par­ents tak­ing their chil­dren out of school.

Garcia condemns parent’s involvement in fight

The Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion is call­ing for in­creased part­ner­ship be­tween it­self and the po­lice ser­vice af­ter a video be­gan cir­cu­lat­ing of a par­ent and child as­sault­ing a stu­dent.

Min­is­ter of the Ed­u­ca­tion An­tho­ny Gar­cia has con­demned the act.

US Embassy seeking 5 youths & mentor for 3-week exchange programme

The United States Embassy in Port-of-Spain has opened applications for the 2020 Youth Ambassadors Programme.

The Embassy is looking for five students between the ages 15-18 years and one adult mentor to participate in a three-week exchange programme, July 30 to August 16, in the United States.

The Youth Ambassadors programme is funded by the US Department of State and implemented by the US Embassy, Trinidad and Tobago.

It says the deadline for applications is midnight, March 13, 2020.

UWI hosts forum today on coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will be hosting a Vice-Chancellor's Forum titled “Demystifying the Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)”, Thursday 30 January 2020.

The Forum can be viewed via UWItv’s livestream (at www.uwitv.org) from 1 pm local time. Those watching the broadcast can send their questions in via the chat feature for the livestream.

At a protest out­side the col­lege’s city cam­pus this morn­ing De­Fre­itas said the lec­tur­ers have been in­tim­i­dat­ed by the ad­min­is­tra­tion for a num­ber of years. She said the union would not sit by and tol­er­ate this type of op­pres­sion.

Another school fight video goes viral

The video of a school fight has surfaced on social media, this time allegedly between female students of a St Augustine school.

In the video, the students were seen shoving, slapping and punching each other, while their classmates scream in excitement.

This all took place in a hallway of the school.

The fight appears to have continued outside the school compound, as another video shows the students fighting in a savannah. However, the physical row is quelled by an adult, as the rest of the school students look on from higher ground.
