T&T's relief efforts to the Bahamas praised by Stew

British High Commissioner Tim Stew commended Trinidad and Tobago's relief efforts for the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian on Monday night.

Referencing TT's deployment of 100 troops to the hurricane struck islands, while addressing chief of Defence Staff Air Commodore Darryl Daniel who was among various stakeholders at the High Commissioner's residence during the Launch of their 'Security Awareness Week 2019', Stew described the effort as "an excellent contribution and response to a terrifying experience suffered by the people of the Bahamas."

"CDS (Chief of Defence Staff) I can only commend Trinidad and Tobago's initiative and support to your neighbour in their time of need. It speaks volumes about this country's generosity and sense of global regional responsibility," he said.

The first edition of the event themed, 'Security Awareness for Everyone (SAFE)' was launched last year and involves security representatives from the TTPS, diplomatic community and the private sector gathering in one location to "share security challenges, build stronger networks and work out how we can best help each other to build a safer T&T," Stew said.

Validating the importance of communication among the stakeholders in fighting evolving crime and ensuring safety, Stew cited worrying threats which presented themselves during the year such as "tit-for-tat killings over control of territory and drugs; crime driven by the difficult socio-economic circumstances of some communities, manipulated by so-called community leaders" and "rising instances of domestic violence."

He also commended the Chamber of Commerce, which last week launched a domestic violence policy for its members to help companies deal with the issue saying it was "a tangible example of the private sector engaging and taking a lead on a sensitive but critical issue of personal security."

In his feature address, Commodore Daniel acknowledged the importance of "cross-sector networking" in ensuring a safer Trinidad and Tobago.

Also present at the event was last year's featured speaker, Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith.
